My journey into fire dancing started when I was a senior in high school. Another student in my gym class gave a presentation on poi and the Maori culture. As part of the presentation, she brought tennis balls and tights, which is all you need to create a basic set of poi. I took to it pretty quickly and spent weeks soaking up as much information as I could. After about a year of practicing the basic movements, I acquired a fire poi set. From there, I've branched off into fire fans, fire snakes and fire hoops. I love where this skill has taken me, the new friends I've made through it and what I've learned about myself in the process.
