So after this whole SOPA chaos, I’ve decided to no longer support GoDaddy by giving them my business. Sure, they’ve taken back their support of the bill…but they haven’t actively opposed it (heh, maybe because they helped write it…)
I’ve started the process of transferring my domains to namecheap.com because they have a pretty spiffy coupon code going on right now (“SOPAsucks” in case you’re wondering), making it really cheap for me to leave GoDaddy. I don’t know if this process means my site will go down temporarily…but it’s still up so that’s a plus…not that I update this much anyway…but I’m hoping to get around to it…
It’s been fun watching GoDaddy react to the mass exodus from their services. Their Twitter stream is exploding with spam, telling people they’ve taken back their wicked ways, begging people to stay. When I called customer service to figure out their painfully difficult site, the service rep. started bad mouthing the company I was going to which I thought was unprofessional. I just calmly told him that I appreciated NameCheap’s constant opposition of SOPA and the support I’ve been getting from them in my research for a new domain registrar.
SOPA was the proverbial straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back for me though. The user interface on GoDaddy’s account manager is atrocious and I dread every moment I have to be logged into their site. Not to mention their objectifying use of women in their commercials…ick. I want my money to go to a company that doesn’t spend thousands of dollars on debasing advertisement.
I hope NameCheap has a better UI, and I hope I don’t experience any of the glitches it seems countless others are currently experiencing. Time will tell! In the mean time, I’ll keep thinking about updates to my site and I hope everyone is doing their part to prevent SOPA from ruining the internet as we know it
